Hi everyone!
A new blog, because of some international events that happened recently :) A few weeks ago I met Mona & Kathi in Groningen, because Mona had to look for a new place in the city. It was really nice that Kathi came along, coz this way.. Mona and I could show her some 'Groningen' city..
Unfortunately it was 2e Pinksterdag (some of you know this;) the shops where shut. So we couldn't climb the 'Martini tower', but Kathi was lucky enough to experience the Groningse version of the Red Light district. I think I can speak for her if I say it was quite fascinating.
Then later on we went out for diner, and she had some typical dutch 'bitterballen'. She didn't really like it, but oh well.. I do :)
Last weekend was really nice aswell. Alison, a Irish classmate, and a friend of her Emily came to the Netherlands as part of a 'Europe trip'. Sarah also joined with a friend and together with Tianda we went to Ameland, one of the 5 islands of The Netherlands. First night at Tianda's caravan, and the second day in Sarah's house. Tianda had to work, so we didn't spend a lot of time with her, but the rest of us went on the bikes (how dutch can you be) to the beach and the supermarket and so on.
The supermarket was quite something, coz i showed them loads of Dutch specialties and nice food and stuff. The Irish girls were really enthousiastic and they wanted to try a lot of stuff.
Oh, I forgot to mention, before we left to Ameland, we met in Groningen, had a cappucino, and ordered some of the best 'belgium fries' you can get in Groningen.. with saté sauce of course! (its the peanut butter sauce)
first night on Ameland I made 'stamppot andijvie' but unfortunately I forgot the bacon. So it was nice, but something was missing. Oh well.. the taste was still good, so thats grand! Tianda and I also brought 'vla' and they liked that aswell.
The next day, as i mentioned before, we explored the dutch supermarket, en during the rest of the day, they tried all different kinds of food, like:
'Suikerbrood' which is a REALLY nice bread, with loads of sugar in it.. really nice..
'Speculoos' which is a kind of peanut butter, but then different. With the taste of 'speculaas' cookies, I don't think there's an english word for it.. Oh well i guess you just have to come to taste it! They loved it, because you're supposed to put this on bread, which they did initially, but later on they just scooped it out with a spoon :)
They also tried another vla, chocolate whipped cream vla.. Curious? google it: Slagroom vla, chocolade.
Let me see.. we also tried Appelmoes, which is kind of a mushed apple sauce thing.. Its REALLY good, especially with patato things.. (you eat it with ur diner). We made patato pancakes, so the appelmoes was perfect :)
Sarah and I both love it so much, that we scooped this right out of the jar.. ^^
Let me see.. we also tried Pisang Ambon, which apperently you also can't buy in Ireland. Its a liquor kinda thing of Bananas.. mix it with Sprite/7-up and its really sweet, but nice! Its like a soda.. :) On friday we had the same, but then with a 'red fruit' liquor.. really nice aswell..
And some of you are already familiar with the dutch chocolate sprinkles: Hagelslag... Well we bought a slightly different thing: Vlokken.. and they loved it aswell... It was even quit convenient on the boat, because we wanted a bite.. just something to eat.. and so the vlokken came out.. :) Also pure its nice... Who needs bread? :P
So then we wanted to go to the beach.. but there was SO much wind, that we could barely reach the sea without getting a shit load of sand in our eyes..
Well we reached the sea and alison and I were diehard and went into the sea with our feet..
Cold, but quite nice!
By the way: mathieu; thanks for the card trick, I managed to get them Flabbergasted! But I also explained the tricks.. sorry for that... :$
Then we had to go on our way back, and we met Tianda agian on the Boat! Since it was easier for Sarah to take a different route then we had to do, Tianda and the two Irish girls went in the car with me. In the käfer.. However.. My wipers were broken back then, (I already fixed them) and it rained like hell! haha imagine not being able to see a thing on the road, and drive a really old, non-wind-resistant car.. ^^ Nice one!
But we made it home, and a Kids Menu at burger king was a well deserved treat :)
Today I saw Fleur again, which was really nice but we both agreed that is was also strange to see each other in The Netherlands, in stead of Ireland.. that we both miss a lot!
So even though I miss Ireland and the people, the past weekend was really nice, so I can say: Come and explore The Netherlands, and I'll give you the Ultimate Dutch Experience! :) Next week friday I'm gonna have my own place in Groningen, so it'll be perfect! FAIR GRAND LIKE!!
R U in?!
